Skinning for Gold in World of Warcraft

For most folks, skinning appears to be pretty boring. It may not be exotic, it may not open up glamorous career opportunities, but it’s a guaranteed way you can accumulate a massive gold stash. Most gold guides for World of Warcraft agree on one thing, skinning the most efficient profession in the entire game.

Skinning is so effective for two reasons. One, you can do it anywhere. You don’t have to go to any specific locations, or regions, to do more skinning. You can always skin whatever you can kill locally. What’s more, people, who can’t skin will be leaving fresh steaming carcasses lying around in their wake. Scavenging these for your own use as a skinner is going to further boost your success.

So, where should you be skinning?

Obviously you can do it anywhere, but some places will deliver better results than others. Good gold guides will give you some good locations. An example for lower levels would be areas where lots of hunting quests occur, like Stranglethorn Vale. If a group goes in doing the expedition mastery quest, they could be leaving behind up to 60 kills per player. For a skinner, this is like Christmas.

Right, but what should you be skinning?

While skinning anything and everything possible certainly has some obvious logical benefits, there are times when focusing on certain targets can really help your efforts at making gold via skinning. For instance in Outland, it is possible to make huge cash with the benefit of rare leather drops. Nagrand, obviously, has also become a mecca for skinners. Many World of Warcraft gold guides will advise skinners to sit in Nagrand and just scavenge from the 180 some odd kills being left behind by somebody on a Nagrand mastery quest. There are plenty of skinnable mobs, and they perpetually respawn. A good World of Warcraft gold guide can get you making gold faster than you thought with “boring” skinning. Being rich is, in fact, not boring.

The keys to really maximizing your gold making efforts as a skinner are knowing where to be, knowing how long to stay there, and knowing when to go there in the first place. If you refine your skinning technique, and do your homework you can easily make 150-200 gold an hour at high levels, and that’s not even considering all of the item drops and vendor trash you’ll get on top of that.
